Electrical Testing & Fault-Finding Refresher (Non-Accredited)
ABOUT THE COURSE
WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE
This course is designed for qualified electricians, experienced electrical workers and apprentices who want to refresh and strengthen their skills in electrical testing, verification and fault finding.
It is particularly suitable for electricians/Apprentices who:
- Want to improve their confidence when testing electrical installations and identifying common faults.
- Need to refresh their knowledge of safe testing procedures, test instruments and fault-finding techniques.
- Want practical experience applying testing and diagnostic methods to electrical circuits and installations.
.
COURSE OVERVIEW
Electrical Testing & Fault-Finding Refresher provides an opportunity for qualified electricians, experienced electrical workers and apprentices to develop and refresh essential testing, verification and fault-finding skills used in electrical installations.
The course combines theory with practical activities, allowing participants to refresh their understanding of test procedures and then apply those techniques to realistic electrical circuits and fault scenarios.
Participants will revisit areas such as:
- Safe preparation and isolation before testing
- Selection and correct use of electrical test instruments
- Continuity and resistance testing
- Insulation resistance testing
- Polarity and polarity-related faults
- Verification of electrical circuits
- RCD testing
- Identifying common electrical installation faults
- Systematic fault-finding techniques
- Interpreting test results and identifying abnormal readings
- Applying relevant electrical installation requirements
- Safe restoration of circuits following testing and fault-finding
The course is intended as a skills and knowledge refresher rather than initial training for someone with no electrical experience. It provides participants with the opportunity to practise testing and fault-finding techniques in a controlled training environment and build confidence before applying these skills in the workplace.

FAQs
Do I need to be a qualified electrician to enrol?
Yes. This refresher course is for people with existing electrical trade knowledge and experience. Entry requirements may apply depending on the course delivery and training requirements.
Is this course a nationally recognised qualification?
No. This is a non-accredited refresher course designed to refresh existing knowledge and practical skills. It does not provide a new qualification or unit of competency.
Will I receive a certificate after completing the course?
Participants can receive a Certificate of Attendance confirming that they have completed the refresher training. The certificate does not represent a nationally recognised qualification.
What will I learn during the course?
The course focuses on practical testing and fault-finding skills, starting with a systematic approach to fault-finding, alongside using test instruments, interpreting test results, and identifying electrical faults
Will there be practical training?
Yes. The course is designed to include practical activities so participants can apply testing and fault-finding techniques rather than only covering the theory.
What types of faults will I learn to identify?
The practical activities can cover common electrical faults and testing situations, such as incorrect circuit connections, polarity issues, continuity problems, insulation resistance issues, earth faults and other faults that may be encountered during electrical work.
Is this course suitable if I have been away from electrical work for several years?
Yes. This is one of the main reasons an electrician may choose to complete a refresher course. It provides an opportunity to revisit testing and fault-finding procedures and rebuild confidence before applying those skills in the workplace.
Will this course help me become a better fault finder?
The course is designed to help you refresh a systematic approach to fault finding. You will have the opportunity to practise testing, interpret results and work through faults in a controlled training environment.
Why should I do a testing and fault-finding refresher course?
Electrical testing and fault-finding are practical skills that can become less familiar when they are not used regularly. A refresher allows electricians to revisit these skills in a practical training environment and build confidence before applying them at work. This is also consistent with the reasons electricians commonly seek refresher training after working away from installation testing for a period of time.
Is this course suitable for apprentices?
Yes. This course is also suitable for electrical apprentices who want to strengthen their practical testing and fault-finding skills. It provides apprentices with additional practical experience and greater confidence when carrying out testing and fault-finding activities under appropriate supervision.
