About the Course

This training course focuses on a need to integrate this testing with the commissioning of other electrical services. Therefore, the units also emphasized at the basics of commissioning of the following items as an aid to understanding the commissioning processes involved (by others, usually the manufacturer or a specialist contractor), rather than an in-depth knowledge of the subject:

  • Lighting systems, including emergency lighting
  • Lightning protection
  • Generators
  • Structured cabling, including fibre optic cable
  • Fire safety alarms
  • Lift installations
  • Transformers
  • High-voltage and low-voltage switchgear
  • Uninterruptable power supplies

This course will deal with the following units-

  • Phase sequence
  • Functional Testing
  • Verification of voltage drop
  • Certification
  • Continuity of ring circuits
  • Continuity of protective conductors
  • Insulation resistance
  • Testing of SELV, PELV and FELV
  • Barriers and enclosures
  • Impedance of walls and floors
  • Polarity
  • Earth electrode resistance testing
  • Protection by supply disconnection
  • Earth-fault loop impedance
  • Additional protection (RCDs)
  • Prospective fault current

Program objective

After completing the course, the trainee would be able to perform following functions:

  • Equip the user to prepare a full specification prior to the commencement or alteration of any electrical installation
  • Understand both the need and precisely what detailed design information is required for a competent person to test and commission and installation
  • Provide assistance in the provision of commissioning procedures
  • Provide assistance in the preparation or specifying the needs of operational manuals and maintenance schedules, ‘as fitted’ drawings etc.
