Proving Workplace Scope: A Photo Checklist for Electrical Employers in QLD
In Queensland, electrical apprentices must be exposed to various real-world tasks to ensure they become competent and well-rounded electricians. Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and licensing bodies require employers to demonstrate that they provide access to a variety of work — not just repetitive or limited experience.

One practical and effective way to do this is through a photo-based checklist that shows the company’s current work environments, tools, and project types.
Why This Matters
These photos help confirm that apprentices placed with a business will gain the experience required for key UEEEL units of competencies
– UEEEL0003 – Arrange circuits, control and protection for electrical installations
– UEEEL0012 – Install low voltage wiring, appliances, switchgear and associated accessories
– UEEEL0018 – Select wiring systems and select cables for low-voltage electrical installations
– UEEEL0039 – Design, install and verify compliance and functionality of general electrical installations
What Should Employers Photograph?
The goal is not to show the apprentice performing the task — instead, it’s to prove that the company routinely does this type of work, and therefore, the apprentice would have access to it over time.

Installation Work
- Rough-in photos: Framing stages of houses, townhouses, apartments, sheds
- Switchboards: Work-in-progress and completed switchboards
- Trenches & Services: Underground mains, pits, conduits, service pillars
- Tools in Van/Ute: Equipment showing preparation for low-voltage installation
- Fixtures and Accessories: Power points, lighting, fans, switchgear
Testing Capability
- Multimeters, insulation resistance testers, RCD/loop testers
- Test documentation systems (e.g., tablets, paper forms)
- Testing tools stored in the company vehicle or office
Safety & Compliance
- PPE available (hi-vis, gloves, boots, safety glasses, hard hats)
- Low voltage rescue kit (along with documentation and signage)
- Lockout/tagout equipment and safe work procedures, Risk assessments (JSA, JSEA, Take 5’s)
Variety of Job Types
- Domestic or Commercial new builds or renovations
- Industrial: 3-phase systems, switchboards, automation
Tips for Submitting the Checklist
- Include dates and suburbs of each project (no need for complete addresses)
- Keep photos clear and well-labeled
- Create a PDF or digital folder with sections for each category
- Avoid old archived work — use current work the business is actively involved in
Who Should Use This?
- Employers registering an apprentice or renewing a training contract
- RTOs assessing employer suitability
- Group Training Organisations (GTOs) placing apprentices
- Auditors or regulatory bodies verifying training environments
By taking the time to document their scope of work through photos, employers can clearly demonstrate their suitability to train the next generation of electricians — and ensure apprentices receive the diverse experience they need to succeed.
