Restricted Electrical Licence Course BRISBANE

This nationally recognised course develops the competencies required to safely work on electrically connected equipment within the scope of a Restricted Electrical Licence. The training covers electrical safety, isolation procedures, testing and verification, fault-finding techniques, and the disconnection and reconnection of low-voltage electrical equipment.

Participants undertake a combination of theoretical learning and practical training using industry-standard equipment and workplace-based scenarios. Emphasis is placed on hazard identification, risk control, compliance with electrical safety legislation, and the correct use of electrical testing instruments to verify equipment safety before returning it to service.

The course is designed to build confidence, technical capability and a strong safety mindset, ensuring participants can perform restricted electrical tasks competently and in accordance with industry best practice.

There is no funding available for this course.

The course duration depends on your trade experience and workplace evidence.
Typical completion time: 1–3 weeks.

• Basic Computer Literacy.
• You will need a Gmail Account to have access to Google Drive to participate in this course.
• A valid Photo ID (e.g., Driver’s Licence).
• Australian Passport / Birth Certificate / Medicare Card.
• Electrical work training permit.
• A current LVR/CPR certificate or UETDRRF004 – Perform rescue from a live LV panel.
• Special requirement: The candidate needs to provide evidence of work done under supervision (Logbook). This requirement varies by applicant. The restricted electrical license and its conditions vary from one trade to another. The requirement of work experience for a self-employed plumber for a REL (Restricted Electrical License) would be different to the requirements of an instrument technician pursuing a REL (Restricted Electrical License). A soft copy of the learner resource book or lecture notes is free, and we will provide it as a Google Drive link only and not as a PDF or downloadable document.

If you require a hard copy, a printing charge of $150 for each copy and a $100 binding charge per copy will be collected from the student.

Australian standards cannot be printed due to copyright restrictions but are available for borrowing for the duration of the course with a refundable deposit of $250 per copy. Soft copies are free to use on Ausinet laptops while in class.

On successful completion, you will receive nationally recognised units of competency as stated on your electrical work permit.

Selective nationally recognised units are available at AUSINET as part of the restricted electrical course, depending on your permit. Check your permit and Unit availability from the list below before enrolling in the course.

Ausinet, as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), recognises the Australian Qualifications Framework qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by any other Australian RTO. You are encouraged to submit requests for credit from previous studies when enrolling to ensure that you are not enrolling in units you may not need to undertake. If you have completed units at other RTO and you think they may count towards the award requirements of the course you are enrolled in at Ausinet, submit an official copy of your results for the units you have undertaken. Credit transfer may fast-track your course.

Recognition of prior learning also referred to as RPL, is the formal acknowledgment of a person’s current skills and knowledge experience gained throughout life – regardless of how they have been acquired. This is an important assessment pathway, particularly for working people who are considering doing a course. The recognition gained may considerably reduce the study time needed to get a qualification. The RPL assessment may include workplace observation, interviews and professional conversations, work samples and documented evidence.

This licence can improve job flexibility and productivity by enabling faster fault response and reducing reliance on external electrical contractors for minor tasks.

You do not need to be an electrician, but you should have experience in your trade or occupation in which working on electrical equipment is part of your normal duties.

No, Installation of new electrical circuits, switchboards, power outlets and lighting generally requires an unrestricted electrical work licence.

Yes. Many plumbers obtain a Restricted Electrical Licence to:

• Disconnect and reconnect hot water systems
• Service pumps
• Replace electrical components associated with plumbing equipment

Yes. Restricted licences are commonly issued to refrigeration and air-conditioning technicians to allow electrical work associated with servicing and maintaining HVAC equipment.

The Electrical Safety Office does not prescribe a specific logbook.

However, AUSINET may require a practical logbook to demonstrate sufficient workplace experience and competency before issuing training outcomes. This requirement is based on your previous experience and the evidence you can provide to AUSINET.

Yes. Self-employed tradespeople may apply, provided they can demonstrate an occupational need for the licence.

Depending on your licence category and training completed, fault-finding activities may be permitted within the scope of your licence.

The logbook is optional to complete in class. Students can choose to complete the logbook at their workplace instead, which can save them $2,500. We make sure students are informed of this option upfront so they can choose the most cost‑effective pathway.

All students receive access to the documentation and instructions required to complete the logbook. The logbook can be completed after finishing the course, as long as the tasks are carried out under the supervision of a qualified person — this includes a licensed electrician or a supervisor who holds a Restricted Electrical Licence or higher.

To meet regulator requirements, the logbook must include 10 completed jobs involving the connection and disconnection of relevant electrical equipment. Each job must be signed off by your supervising qualified person.
